Equality and diversity
We always aim to place the interests of customers, members of the legal profession, and its staff at the forefront of our work.
Fairness has always been a key element of what we do and we are committed to placing equality and diversity at the heart of the organisation.
We have publishd our first policy and strategy (PDF 159K) for promoting equality and diversity in all that we do over the next two years. It offers our diversity vision and commitment. All of this is underpinned by a number of strategic objectives which show what specific actions we will be taking to support the achievement of our vision.
Equality impact assessments
The equality impact assessment process is one of the tools which helps us to achieve our equality and diversity commitments. We need to conduct equality impact assessments on our policies, processes and practices.
What is an equality impact assessment?
An equality impact assessment is a thorough, detailed and systematic analysis of the potential or actual effects of a policy/process/practice or function on the people it applies to. It is carried out to ascertain whether the activity in question is in practice having a differential effect on different groups of people and the reasons why if it is.
What is the purpose of an equality impact assessment?
Our policies, procedures, functions and the decisions we make affect people differently. In addition to helping us meet our legislative duties; equality impact assessments help us to see how these can potentially or actually impact on different groups. This includes being able to identify and demonstrate the positive effects as well as any potential or actual adverse effects.
The process helps us to ensure that our service does not unlawfully disadvantage anyone and that it is fair. It also helps us to ensure that we have considered the needs, circumstances and concerns of those who are/will be affected by our decisions and service delivery.
